VARSITY BASEBALL BEATS CASTRO VALLEY IN OPENER

             After a week of bad weather delayed the start of the season the Eagles showed they were ready to play beating Castro Valley High School 7-5.  Redwood exploded for 6 runs in the first inning on four hits.  Michael Giltner started things off with a sharp single to right field.  Eric McPherson walked and with one out A.J. Vanegas drove in the first run with a single to left.  After Ben Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases Josh Montenegro scored two when the ball snuck under the glove of the shortstop for an error.  With two outs Nick Costanzo doubled home Ben Johnson.  Wayne Smith completed the scoring with an R.B.I. single to driive in Josh Montenegro.

Starting Pitcher A.J. Vanegas endured a difficult first inning when his defense committed three errors that led to two runs.  Castro Valley came back and scored 2 in the 4th to pull within two runs.  However in the top of the 5th the Eagles added a run with an R.B.I. single by Josh Montenegro driving in Ben Johnson who had reached on a walk.   Michael Giltner came in to pitch the final three innings for the save giving up just one run in the 5th.
